Five Gryffindor Book Recs // rating books based on house traits with Charis Rae, Olivia, and Kelly

I’m so excited to do this collaboration today! One of my favorite series ever is Harry Potter, and this post is brought to you by a collab with other fabulous bloggers in the other Hogwarts Houses! 😊

Today, Charis Rae, OliviaKelly, and I will each be posting similar book recommendations based on our separate Hogwarts Houses! If you have not seen their blogs before, I highly encourage you to check them out, because they are all some of the best and nicest book bloggers I know! 💕 (And they all love Harry Potter so of course they’re amazing already)

I’m going to share a few of my favorite Gryffindor-esqe books! 🦁 I recently went through my entire “Read” shelf on Goodreads, and these were the most Gryffindor books I could find! (As it turns out, I tend to read more Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff books than anything else, but we’ll work with what I have!)

For this post, I will be considering these five books and the amount of Gryffindor traits the main characters exhibit. Then, I will rate the amount of each of these traits one a scale of 1-5 in lions! Let’s get started!

Skyward, by Brandon Sanderson

I chose Skyward because the main character, Spensa, has a lot of Gryffindor qualities. She’s brave, fearless (sometimes a little too much so), and most of all, she’s extremely determined. Once she sets her mind to something, she’ll never let it go. Sometimes she’s a bit too reckless, but hey, what’s a Gryffindor without a little risk?

Sadie, by Courtney Summers

The main character Sadie is probably the bravest character on this rec list. In Sadie, she goes on a quest a find her sister’s murderer, and she comes face-to-face with real-life danger on numerous occasions. She is highly determined to get what she wants, and nothing can stop her from succeeding. It takes a lot of courage to go through the trials Sadie has to face!

(The cover gets bonus points for having red, haha! Very Gryffindor indeed.)

Daring and Nerve: 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁
Determination: 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁

Reckless: 🦁🦁🦁🦁

The Disasters, by M. K. England

The synopsis for The Distasters starts off with “Hotshot pilot Nax Hall has a history of making poor life choices,” and if that doesn’t scream reckless, then I don’t know what does! Nax is highly determined to become a pilot, and he’ll pretty much do anything to do so in this book. He’s a chaotic Gryffindor, what else can I say?

Courage and Chivalry: 🦁🦁🦁
Brave (and Brave at Heart): 🦁🦁🦁🦁
Daring and Nerve: 🦁🦁🦁🦁
Determination: 🦁🦁🦁🦁

Reckless: 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁

The Knife of Never Letting Go, by Patrick Ness

The main character of The Knife of Never Letting Go is Todd Hewitt, and he’s a pretty reckless little guy. However, he also is very brave/courageous to question his authority and uncover the truth of his people throughout the series. A lot of challenges are thrown at Todd, but he’s always determined to make it through and do whatever it takes to complete his goals.

(Again, bonus points for the red cover!)

Daring and Nerve: 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁
Determination: 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁

Reckless: 🦁🦁🦁🦁

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs

This one is a little tricky, but I think the main character Jacob is more of a Gryffindor than anything else. He’s always determined and usually brave, even when faced with the unknown (whether it’s scary monsters or suspicious people). And is he reckless? Definitely. But that’s usually what gets him out of trouble!

Brave (and Brave at Heart): 🦁🦁🦁🦁
Daring and Nerve: 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁
Determination: 🦁🦁🦁🦁

  1. Xandra, your recs are so awesome! I love them all! And I had so much fun doing this collab with you! ❤ Also, I find it so funny how we both included Sadie in our lists! It goes to show what an AMAZING character she is, and all these admirable traits she shows! And, I totally agree with Spensa and Todd Hewitt! They both might be a little reckless, but their courage and determination is unmatched! ❤

  2. AHHHHHH!!! I love this post so much 😍 I especially love your Gryffindor rating system! I haven’t read any of these books yet (and I’m actually a Hufflepuff, so maybe that’s why 😂) but I’ve got Sadie high up on my TBR even though it’s kinda out of my comfort zone 😬 It’s got far too many good reviews to pass up!

  3. The Disasters is SUCH a Gryffindor book, I’m dying! First of all, I love Nax Hall to little pieces, but oh my god, every time I think of him now, it’s going to be alongside some cackling because he has so much Potter in him. This was awesome!

  4. You picked such fantastic Gryffindor books, Xandra! Honestly Brandon Sanderson himself gives me Gryffindor vibes for some reason. XD I haven’t read Sadie yet, but the entire premise of the story screams “Gryffindor.” Also, your post made me appreciate Gryffindor qualities so so much, so thank you for that! Thank you so much for joining me and the other girls for such a fun collab — we wouldn’t have been able to do this without you! ❤️💛

  5. What a fantastic post, I love the idea of rating the Protagonist according to the House Traits 🥰 I’ll definitely be checking out the other posts as well to find my own House (Hufflepuff) 💛 I have only read Miss Peregrine’s from your list and I agree that Jacob is brave, especially in the face of this new worlds he enters!

  6. I’m in Slytherin and I definetly need some book recommendations in that field! Great list – I really need to check out Sadie since it’s got so much hype recently. I might steer clear of it for a few months though because of suicide themes 🙂

  7. Omigod I love thisss. I’ve seen people recommending books based on Hogwarts houses before, but not with a chart that rates how strong they are in the characteristics. This is so gooooood. (not that I should ever be surprised by the attention to detail I find on this blog). Amazing Xandra. And as much as my opinion is worth, considering I’ve not read the books (ahem) I think these are good recs.

I really want to read Sadie and the disasters– I love how you put ““Hotshot pilot Nax Hall has a history of making poor life choices,” and if that doesn’t scream reckless” because it certainly does shout Gryffindor haha!!
This is such a unique post and I adored reading it!! And it gave me all the Harry Potter feels so it is wonderful!! ❤

  9. What a fun idea, Xandra! Love that you did the Lion ratings for each trait! Thanks for your great recommendations. 🙂 Sadie & Miss Peregrine’s are the only two I read so far & they are both worthy of this list so I’ll def check out the other ones now!
