Reasons Why I Am Basically Newt Scamander

Despite the fact that Newt Scamander is a tall, fictional male character born in the late 1890s and I am a small, very real girl born in the late 1990s, I think it’s time we discussed our similarities.

A few months ago, I made a post about the fact that I may or may not be Harry Potter. (I mean, of course I’m not, but the post was Reasons Why I Am Basically Harry Potter and y’all joked I may actually be him. As if I could be that cool.)

And now, before anything else tragic happens to the Fantastic Beasts series, like please, JKR, don’t ruin my precious Newt, I would like to present this post to you, with all of the evidence out on the table.

We like to smuggle cute animals.

Perhaps you thought I meant “snuggle”, but nope, you read that correctly.

Last year, while at college, I was part of my university’s Cat Club. On our campus, there are a lot of stray cats which wound up living with us, and as a club, we basically just… fed them, and pet them whenever we wanted. The cats are super friendly, and I just love cats, okay?

But also last year, my dorm room was on the first floor of the building, and the doors led to the outside, right where my favorite cats liked to sleep.

Every once in a while, but especially during the winter, my roommate and I would let one of the cats into our room. I don’t know about your school rules, but this is a big no no for us! Why? I’m not sure, but these kitties are just too sweet to pass up the opportunity.

Sometimes, my favorite cat (his name is Bowie) would stay in our room for hours, until it was finally time to go to bed. And one time he actually spent the night with us, because we fell asleep before we could let him out! (I mean, he also didn’t complain about this at all! He just went with it, like sleepovers were his norm.)

So yes, I do in fact like to smuggle animals.

We sometimes like animals more than people, and no, we’re not ashamed.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never missed an opportunity to smile at a dog or cat, or even a small chubby bird. If I see an animal on the street, I’ll immidiately start beaming at it like an idiot, and hope to get close enough to pet it or just wave and say, “Hello!”

Yes, you read that right. I like to say “hello” to animals. That’s normal, isn’t it? Do y’all ever do this?

And people? I don’t do that with people. *shrugs* Only my friends get that privilege

Me, when I open a door to a room with people in it.

We’re generally quiet, but actually have good advice.

“My philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice.”

Newt Scamander, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I’ve never been in a relationship before, but I swear, sometimes my friends will come to me for advice and I’ll be able to talk them out of all their worries and suspicions. Am I… a secret advice whisperer? Maybe.

It’s actually weird that I often have bouts of advice, since I rarely listen to it myself. But I try my best!

Untitled design-51.png

We’re both cute.

That’s it, we don’t even have to dispute this.

I’m kidding! But you’ll just have to take my word for it, though.

How do you even talk to someone you like? Neither of us knows.

One of the few things I remember from The Crimes of Grindelwald was that it took Newt several days to track down and talk to Tina, and like… I feel that.

If I ever find a guy I want to talk to, um… what am I supposed to do?? I went to an all girls school for four years and now I’m just… afraid of guys? How do you talk to them, teach me your ways.

But I would also be totally fine with just running away from my feelings with a bunch of animals in my bag. That sounds great to me.

Other random coincidental reasons:

  • The other day I accidentally quoted Newt with the “worrying means you suffer twice” saying, and I thought I was giving myself some good advice from the heart, but nope, I was accidentally quoting one of my faves!
  • My fashion choices also change every few months. And I love navy blue!
  • I’m also very quiet and shy, but I love adventure, and I love visiting New York City!
  • Although I’m 1000% an introvert, I always seem to become friends with extroverts… 🤔
  • I’m writing a book! And only my favorite people in the world will have access to it when I want them to.
  • I have a sister, and we’re pretty different from each other, but we’re close and we love each other anyway. And I would do anything to save her from danger!

  1. Ah I LOVE this!! Newt is my absolute favorite, because I relate to him quite a lot as well 🥰 Animals are just amazing and I’m a bit jealous that you could befriend so many stray cats, that would be my literal dream 😻 I also don’t know how to be cool and actually approach people, I always tend to get nervous and awkward 😅 I definitely hope the future films won’t hurt Newt too much 😮

    1. Thank you!! Newt is most definitely my favorite Fantastic Beasts character (and I really hope he gets more screen time in the upcoming movies!)! I love the cats on my campus, because most of them are very friendly and love to be cuddled! And yes, I also get very awkward around other people, unless I already know them 😅

  2. I would TOTALLY smuggle cats!

But if I was a Harry Potter character, I’d either be Percy Weasley or Remus Lupin, despite the fact that gryffindor is my smallest percentage house

This post is a great idea! I’ll have to try it sometime (if that’s okay)

      1. Cause he sticks to the rules and is an overachiever and can be kind of a jerk tbh……… Also he wasn’t actually that bad- he got a really good job and his fam hated him for it. And when he was in the wrong he eventually apologized which is something I would do. And he cares about his fam. I’d be a Percy probably but *hopefully* less of a jerk. Also I couldn’t stand to be someone w/o red hair bc I love mine.

        1. also (adding to my own post) I feel like I’d be a bit smarter and could think for myself than Percy is but we have a bunch of similarities (good and bad)

ALSO I would TOTALLY be a Lupin. Percy and Lupin smashed together.

  3. I totally feel you on interacting with animals! I was out hiking with my family and another family came down the trail with a Golden Retriever and I had wondered off to get better pictures of this waterfall and then I saw the golden, ignored the humans, knelt down to her level, waved and said, “Hello!” before realizing the humans were there and I should ask them if I could pet her (and I got to).

Then, I found out later that my uncle saw this and asked my Mom if I was talking to the dog she was like, “Oh, she does that.” *facepalm*

    1. Thank you, Audrey! 😀 Our cat club is really nice, because it’s basically just a bunch of cat lovers feeding the strays on our campus! I just relate to a lot of characters, and I’m sure you’ll find your bookish spirit animal soon!

  4. This was so cute! I lol’ed at snuggle/smuggle part because I really thought I misread it 😂. Have you heard of the saying “animals show themselves to good people”? Your friends are very lucky to basically be friends with Newt Scamander! I’ve noticed I always make friends with extroverts too—maybe it’s the Newt in me 🤔.

  5. Newt is the BIGGEST cinnamon roll & even though I’m the least confrontational person ever, I will literally fight anyone that insults him! OMG I LOVE HOW AWKWARD HE IS TOO. That scene where he’s trying to tell Tina that he likes her in Crimes of Grindelwald felt like watching myself try to flirt 😂

I already *knew* you were an amazing human being but this post is further proof 😉

  6. Newt Scammander is honestly the best FB character and I cannot be proven wrong!
I love cats so much, and would have loved to be able to help strays but luckily I live in an area where there aren’t many strays.
    Amazing post!

  7. I’m finding some similarities between me, Newt and you eheh Navy blue is a great colour and most of my wardrobe is navy blue!! I also love animals, most times more than people, and WORRY NOT, I also talk to animals, they’re too adorable not to.
I’m just *not so great* at giving advice. When I was younger, my friends would come to me all the time because I was a good listener and gave useful advice. Even sometimes relationship advice when I had zero irl experience (summer camp boyfriend doesn’t count), but I think that’s because we read so much and experience so many fictional relationships. Now that I’m in one tho, I have no idea how to act in certain situations …

    1. Me too, most of my clothes are either navy blue or maroon! 😀 And I’m glad you agree about talking to animals like that, haha! I think I can give advice on relationships because I’m also a good listener, and I can give my friends an outside perspective on things they can’t see 🙂

  8. I love this post and I adore Newt. I just think he’s fabulous and impossible not to fall for 😅 plus I love that the film’s contain different magical creatures

It does sound like you have a bit in common 😂 lucky you (: I love animals too. If it makes you feel better I say hi to them too sometimes. Cats mostly as you see them by themselves so I don’t have to worry about looking stupid in front of their owners 😅

  9. Oh my gosh, the campus cats sound so cute. I love that you smuggled one in & let it sleep with you. I also get close to animals, smile, & wave at them but then kind of avert my attention before catching the owners’ eyes so I won’t have to say to him. 🤣 My boyfriend always pushes me along & tells the human, “pretty pup” or whatever should be said by me LOL.

  10. Of course I say hello to all animals I meet, especially doggos. I usually keep repeating “Hello, doggo, hello, doggo, hello, good doggodoggodoggo” to them and forget that there also other people around who look at me like I’m insane. 🤣
I will never get behind that “worrying means you suffer twice” quote though. I mean, I get it but…I still worry? All. the. time. About everything? 😅
