Bookish Breaking News! // Netflix has plans for Shadow and Bone & Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

The next few years are going to be insane, but that’s only because we have several YA books getting adapted into shows! The good kind of Breaking News!

All right, everyone try to stay as calm as you can when I say it…

Netflix is adapting Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse into a Netflix Original Series.

Now, I understand that the book community has not always had the best of luck with TV adaptations, such as with Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments (I don’t know anything about Classie Clare, but from what I’ve heard, the TV show is a huge mess). And then, of course, we have the complete disaster that was the attempted Percy Jackson series (which is a movie series, but it was so bad that we don’t even talk about it).

But I have reason to believe the Grishaverse is in good hands. Netflix has recently announced that Eric Heisserer, writer of the Netflix hit movie Bird Box, is to write for the show. Also, what’s even more, is that they’ve also got Shawn Levy, executive producer of Stranger Things, to produce the show! All right, now I’m excited.

Another reason I believe this has potiential for success is Netflix’s adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. In case you don’t know anything about the series, I’ll catch you up: the Children’s books series by Lemony Snicket was published over 20 years ago, and a few years later, Nickelodeon adapted it in an okay-ish and innacurate movie. But recently, Netflix decided to pick it back up and adapt it into a TV series instead; the Netflix version was very well written, sucessfully accurate to the books, and some would even argue that Netflix’s version was even better than the original books. How’s that for some hope?

In other news, the TV series adaptation of The Raven Cycle is (probably) still in the works! Not much has been said since early 2018, but sometimes no news is good news! I’m still keeping my fingers crossed and staying pumped for that, too.

And that’s a lot of YA book news, if you ask me!

  1. I am VERY EXCITED for this adaptation but also VERY APPREHENSIVE! I feel like it could be a huge success – esp considering how good the A Series of Unfortunate Events show is! – but it could also get so much wrong. Fingers crossed that this is one of the amazing ones!

  2. Ah I cannot WAIT! I’m a little nervous for casting and how they’ll combine the storylines of both series – but I do think it’s in good hands and it’ll turn out good. 🙂 thanks for sharing all this info!!

  3. I’m very excited about all of these adaptation news! I only read the Six of Crows series, but I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to see how they will translate all of this awesomeness on the big screen. Also hoping to see The Raven Cycle adapted, I’m SO curious to see how that will turn out 🙂

    1. I have not read Six of Crows yet, but I am reading the Shadow and Bone series first! I can’t wait to hear more about this TV series – hopefully it will turn out well!
And I’m also excited for the Raven Cycle! 🙂 I haven’t finished that series either, so there’s so much I have to read before all of this happens… 🤣
