Did you know it’s been almost a year since my last writing update? Wow, time really does fly by fast.
Here I am, back with another update about my WIP!
One of the reasons why I haven’t posted another update is because last year, around this time, I decided to completely mess up my WIP by adding two more POV characters. I got as far as creating a general sense of how they would fit into the story, but… there were so many complicated outline issues going on, and I just wasn’t making much progress at all.
The WIP
Yes, I’m still working on the same Fantasy WIP from last time!
I have been writing this WIP since 2018, and so far, it has gone through a lot of major changes. I have written about seven total outlines, and five of those were full, 10k+ word outlines. 😅 I have so many because I don’t want to get rid of the old ones, but sometimes I just need to keep track of all the changes I’ve made so far.
Here’s a bit of what you could expect from my WIP, if you were to read it:
👑 a traitor prince with an emotional secret
🗡 a princess recently awoken from a coma and set on revenge/murder
🔥 a boy abandoned at birth, now raised by dragons
❤️ sibling love
🤝 unlikely friendships
😐 “I Came Out to Have a Good Time and I’m Honestly Feeling So Attacked Right Now” vibes
🌟 SLEEPING BEAUTY x RAPUNZEL + DRAGONS
It’s honestly a lot going on, but somehow… not enough, if that makes sense?
I’m currently the only person who knows anything about this WIP, and it’s just so frustrating sometimes. I have so many questions I need to ask, so many issues I need to resolve, but I can only do it with someone who knows the actual story and has read at least my outline… (and speaking of this, if any of you would like to read some of my WIP, let me know! I’m really just looking for feedback on the first few chapters, to see if it makes sense in the beginning!)
When I started Camp NaNo, I was at 37,900 words in the first draft. Throughout all of my past Writing Updates, the word count has always (embarrassingly) been around the same word count, because I kept writing new chapters and deleting other ones, since major plot points were getting added and some things didn’t make sense anymore. 🙃

Camp NaNoWriMo July 2020
I signed up for my first Camp NaNo last year, but I think I only wrote 1,000 words, and gave up pretty quickly.
But this year, I was determined to actually get something done! This WIP has been unfinished for far too long, and I’m already starting to come up with some new WIP ideas. I had forgotten about the July Camp NaNo until around June 28th, and right away, I decided this was the perfect opportunity to finish (or almost finish) this WIP once and for all.
My goal for this Camp is to write an additional 30,000 words, and I’m on track so far!

My WIP is now around 47,000 words, and I’m right on track! This is definitely the farthest I’ve ever gotten on this WIP.
As of this morning, I have written almost 9,000 words for Camp NaNo. I got a little behind over the weekend (it was a three-day weekend and I spent every single moment of my Friday/Saturday with my family) but I was able to catch up again on July 9th.

Advice?
I’m not sure if I really need advice about word count, but… I am struggling with the middle of this WIP. 😅 I’m getting through it by just dumping my scenes on the page, and I’ll worry about the editing later.
Have any of you ever completed Camp NaNo? Do you have any tips or tricks for continuing?

Good luck with Nano! I don’t usually participate in it anymore, but I’m repolishing an old scifi short story of mine. Hoping to have it published sometime in August/September.

I’ve never hit my NaNo goal before but I’m hoping this will be my year 😂 I’m starting a completely new WIP which I know almost nothing about so I’m just exploring, its a bit difficult sometimes but fun since I’m just throwing new characters and challenges in and seeing what happens haha this is like a super long detailed outline for me basically 😂 your WIP sounds great!! A boy raised by dragons! Came for a good time but feeling attacked vibes! I already love it, good luck with it!!

I’ve never hit my goal before either, but I’m really trying my best! Ooh, good luck with your new WIP! It can be fun to start a new one, although sometimes it is also really hard! All of my outlines are super long and detailed, so I understand 😂 And thank you so much!

Oh, I wish you all the best with NaNo! I’ve actually thought about trying it a couple of times so that it can help me finally finish any of my story ideas. Right now, I do have a WIP idea that I’m semi-working on? Lol, it’s a historical fiction book set in the ancient Arab world (not fantasy) and I’m actually creating a story about the wife of someone who was important then since so far as I’ve seen, there’s nothing about her. According to history, her husband’s family was trying to seize power, and so I’m thinking, what if it was the wife all along who was actually orchestrating and maybe or maybe not successfully overthrowing the current dynasty at the time but of course, no one knew that and her husband got all the credit for doing it successfully/failing spectacularly (no spoilers 😝). I don’t know where I got this idea from but isn’t it really the Queens who actually do the controlling and ruling behind the scenes, and of course, they are forgotten? (quite sadly cause it’d be super epic to learn more about them!!) So, that’s what got me thinking. And her husband would be a really morally grey character which I’m also super excited about…
So, idk if you actually wanted to know all that lol, but it’s my current idea that I thought about in late May. I haven’t really done much with it so far, but I really want to have gotten somewhere major with it by the end of this year. It’s a struggle 😌
Your WIP sounds amazing, and I really hope that you’re able to finish it!!! And well, if you’d like to scream about writer frustrations, I’m right here!! I’m currently stuck in the expository part of my WIP and it’s sucking me out of writing. But maybe I should try outlining it in detail and that might help? IDK
(P.S. Another blogger who’s working on a WIP and actually spurred me to finally do something about my idea is Caitlin @ Caitlin Althea…so if you’d like to chat about it, I’m sure she’d love to as well! She’s also trying to write a fantasy, so Idk, maybe you have some pointers for her? Lol, no pressure, I’m just rambling here)
Sorry for this overly long comment 😅 💖✨

I am so sorry for that monster of a comment!! And I forgot to mention this, but yes, I would love to learn more about your experiences with NaNo! ❤

Thank you, Rukky! 😊 That’s exactly why I’m doing it, so that I can finally finish my WIP! I had originally wanted to finish it this past December, but I added a bunch of things and it became to complicated to finish then, haha. Your historical fiction sounds really cool! It’s so awesome that you’re willing to put that kind of research and work into your story. I love learning and researching things for my writing, but I do feel like it takes a lot of my time. 😅 That’s very exciting! And yes, I loved reading about your WIP, don’t worry about it being too long!
Thanks, I hope I can finish it soon! I’m currently stuck in the middle of it, because I know what I have to write but it’s hard to make the dialogue flow naturally… it just feels awkward and I’m not sure what to do. I should probably just write it and fix the awkwardness later. I think that’s a good idea – maybe you should try outlining the parts you’re having trouble with? For me, the more detail I have, the more it makes sense and the less stressed I feel.
(Oh yes, I’ve talked about writing with Caitlin before! 😊 I’m so excited for her and her writing!) Thank you for your lovely comment! 💖

Ahhh, good luck on Camp Nano, Xandra!! I wish I could give pointers, but when it comes to Camp Nano, I am the Biggest Failure haha. I did it last November, and got 10K-ish down, and then this April, where I reached my goal! which was like 3k. 😂😭
Your WIP sounds ~amazing~!!! I love how Disney-esque while also being totally unique and different from anything I’ve ever read before!!! A traitor prince, a princess who used to be in a coma, dragons, those vibes (!!!), SIGN ME UP!! I’m seriously so excited for it and I hope you finish it! ❤❤❤

Thank you, Sara! 😊 Aww, I hope you can one day succeed in Camp Nano, if you want to! I could never do regular NaNoWriMo, because I have a lot of school work during that time! And I’m struggling this month, even though it’s summer break for me!
Ahh, thank you! I’m glad you’re getting Disney vibes from it – that’s what I was originally going for! Thank you for your enthusiasm, haha! ❤❤

i’ve never actually participated in camp nano before haha (my current wip is still in its outlining phase… which is a bad thing because i’m very indecisive lmao), but good luck with it!! judging from the quality of your blog posts, your writing is probably fantastic – you’ve got this 💖💖

Haha, thank you for your enthusiasm! ❤ (I would also love to hold this book in my hands, but sadly the time is not right)

OOH your WIP sounds amazing, Xandra! The “boy raised by dragons” is also giving me Jungle Book vibes and I love it?? 🤩🤩 I’m aiming for 30K this month, though really I’m just trying to finally finish my WIP! I’m about halfway through my plot arc, so hopefully we can get there. 😂 My project is historical fantasy, and it’s been a wild ride but also a blast.

Thanks so much, Charis! Ooh, that’s a good point, it is kinda like the Jungle Book in that way! A historical fantasy sounds great, that’s really interesting! Good luck with finishing your WIP, I believe in you! ❤

Your WIP sounds so fantastic!! All of those points, especially sleeping beauty x rapunzel + dragons and sibling love make me want to read the book right now 🙂 I’m also doing camp nano, and I have the same word count goal 🙂 My WIP is a mystery about a girl who gets rescued by this group of teenage secret and helps them with finding these documents that are hidden across the west coast. However, she sort of vanishes and while that’s happening, her brother and his best friend are trying to find her, since she’s missing, with the help of the police who think that the girl was kidnapped.
I don’t know if that made any sense, but that’s the main idea. Also, I would love to read more posts about your camp nano experience, and I would love to read and give feedback on the first few chapters of your WIP. I don’t have any experience or anything, but I’d love to help, plus your book sounds so interesting and amazing 🥰

Thank you so much, Aria! ❤ I’m so happy you like those parts about my book – I’m always welcome to reading more sleeping beauty, rapunzel, or dragon elements in books. Good luck with camp nano, I hope you’re doing well so far! I’m a little behind right now, but I think I can catch up soon! 😅
Yes, that made sense! It sounds so interesting! I love mysteries like that. 😊 I’m excited for you to continue with it! Oh, and thank you! I’m waiting to get some feedback on the first chapters from some people, and then I’ll fix it up and let you know when I’m ready for you to read it! 🥰 I would also love to read yours, if you ever need someone to give you feedback as well!

Ahhh, I’m so happy to hear that you’re making progress!! I’m sure you’ve already heard this piece of advice spoken like, a hundred times, but first drafts are supposed/allowed to be bad! What matter is that you create something that can be revised. ❤ And lol I relate to being extremely indecisive. I have been planning a WIP for the past few months, and I kept flip flopping about what I wanted the plot, the setting, etc. to be. I think I have a solid idea of where I want to set it and what I want it to be about now though! If you ever need someone to discuss writing with, my DMs are always open 🥺🥺 Sadly I can't participate in Camp NaNo, because there's still a lot I have to figure out before I start drafting, but I'm cheering you on so much ❤ ❤ You can do it!!

Thank you, Caitlin! That’s the advice I always tell myself when I feel down about my progress – I know it’s not supposed to be “good” yet, but I always feel like it should be. 😂 So I try to forget about my perfectionism and just write down whatever, because what matters is the fact that I’m writing it at all. ❤ I’m glad you have an idea of what you want to do with your WIP! The planning is often the hardest part. You can always talk about writing with me too! ❤ 🥺 And thank you, I’m cheering you on for your planning and outlining!

Yay, Xandra! I am so stoked for you and that you’re making progress on your writing! I’ve won NaNo once and written eight novels to completion, so my biggest advice for finishing a first draft is to TREAT it like a first draft. You don’t have to have all of the answers now. You don’t need to know everything right this second or write an errorless book. You just need to get the story down. The true magic and work, in my opinion, comes later, through the editing, when you get to start evaluating the story and finding what’s broken, narrow in on how you write it and try to make it beautiful (though obviously it’s still WORK to write a first draft).
But, for now? Write this story because it is YOURS. Write it because you want to. Write because you love it.
You can figure out everything else later. For now, just enjoy. I’m rooting for you! ❤

Thank you so much, Nicole! That’s some great advice! ❤ I always forget to remind myself about all of the editing that comes after the first draft. I really need to tell myself that everything can be fixed later, so I shouldn’t worry about it too much right now, and just write. 🙂 Thank you!

It’s definitely hard to figure out and remember (I definitely still struggle with that on every first draft, no matter how many books I write!). But I am rooting for you and I’m always here if you ever need a cheerleader! ❤

Oh heck this WIP sounds so cool!!! A boy raised by dragons?? A princess out for revenge??? I want to read this so bad!! (If you still need someone to read and give feedback, I could probably do that… 👀)
Congrats on doing so well so far on your Camp NaNo goal! I wish you luck – 30k sounds like a great goal, but anything that you manage to add will be an accomplishment 😀
I think dumping the words on the page and worrying about editing later is a great strategy – that’s what I’ve always done when writing first drafts. Middle sections are always the hardest for me, but it’s so satisfying to be able to push through and get to the more exciting ending 😀 You got this!!

Ahh, thank you!! As a fellow dragon lover, I’m glad you like the story idea! (👀 Right now I have some people reading the first few chapters, and when they give it back to me, I’ll fix it up and maybe I’ll let you know when I’m looking for feedback on that, if you’re still interested!)
Camp NaNo is fun so far, and it is a bit difficult now that I’m stuck in the middle! But you’re right, whatever amount of words I manage to write, it’s still an accomplishment. 😊 Thank you!

Ahhh I would love love love to read your Wip! I remember wanting to read it last year because damn it just sounds so good so it would be a dream come true 😄

El, it would mean so much to me if you could read my WIP! 💕 Maybe you could read the first few chapters, or when it’s done, maybe… the whole thing, if you want? 🥺 Either way, I trust you very much and I would love it if you could look at it for edits or comments, but no pressure if you can’t, haha!

Um, this sounds SO GOOD! If you’re still looking for people to give feedback, HI. I just finished second draft edits on my WIP, as well as just handed it off to my writer’s group, so I’ll hopefully be working on a third draft in a couple months. Mine is about a coven of witches who accidentally summon a demon into the heart of Salem, and then even more accidentally become his best friend. It’s silly and ridiculous and a lot of fun, so would love to exchange if you’re interested!

Good luck with Camp! I’m also participating but I’m the most inconsistent writer ever, so now I’m trying to work on that. Your WIP sounds amazing! I’d love to see it published someday 💖 the middle is always the hardest part for me to write as well, so if you find any tips that help with that I’d love to hear them!

Thank you so much! Good luck, if you’re still doing Camp Nano! Yes, the middle is very hard to write, but I’m starting to reach the end and that’s also hard too, haha! When I finish Camp Nano, I’ll write another post, and maybe I’ll include some tips!

Good luck with your WIP and Camp NaNo!! It sounds really interesting and I’m always here for more dragons ❤ I usually get all the words out in the first draft – I tend to overwrite a lot – and make notes of things I already know that I might need to change later. Having that list usually helps me in the revisions! I’m currently revising my own Fantasy WIP all about witches and a high-stakes competition! (And I would totally love to hear more updates about your writing snd progress with Camp NaNo) 🥰
