My Summer TBR // we all know this is subject to change, but I’m trying

I’m very bad at making TBR lists, but please accept this attempt at doing so. I’m trying my best. 😌

Normally, I do not make TBR lists because… well, I just read whatever is available to me. Part of the reason why I read a lot of backlist books is because I get most of my books from my online library through Libby, which lets me check out audiobooks and ebooks. But lately… they haven’t had most of the books I want to read, and if they plan on ever having them in stock, the library usually includes them about a year after the release date. 😦

So despite this setback, I’m writing this TBR post as a list of books I might try to purchase (even through I’m supposed to be on a book ban 😅) or obtain in any other way. I also wanted to share this list because it’s particularly filled with books by Black, POC, and LGBTQ+ authors!

ARCs

Cinderella is Dead, by Kalynn Bayron
Goodreads

I’m currently reading this one, and I’m enjoying it so far! I love a twisted fairytale retelling, and I especially like the rep.

And if I didn’t have an eARC already, I would have bought it for the cover alone! Maybe I will!

Cemetery Boys, by Aiden Thomas
Goodreads

I was very overjoyed to receive this eARC from Netgalley recently! (It’s my second ownvoices Latinx ARC and that makes me very happy!)

My Netgalley “wish” was granted by the publisher a few weeks ago. I’m ready to read it as soon as I finish Cinderella Is Dead!

Most Likely

The Sound of Stars, by Alechia Dow
Goodreads

I read the description for this one, and it sounds so good?? Count me in.

I must purchase this book immediately.

I’ve also heard a lot fo good things about it so far!

The Wicker King, by K. Ancrum
Goodreads

I’ve had this one on my TBR for over a year, and I have not gotten any closer to buying it. 😅

Mostly because I must purchase it to read it, and I’m not sure if I’m ready for that kind of commitment.

You Should See Me In A Crown, by Leah Johnson
Goodreads

Based on the description, this one sounds cute and fun, and that’s honestly very much what I need right now.

I have an audiobook for this one, so I should definitely be able to read this as soon as possible!

The Fever King, by Victoria Lee
Goodreads

This is another book I’ve had on my TBR for at least a year, but because I have to buy it, it’s been a bit difficult to obtain. It’s also always sold out whenever I try to buy it anywhere!

Why is the internet doing this to me? Please let me buy this book in peace!

The Lightning Thief (+ PJO/HoO) by Rick Riordan

So far, the only book I truly own on this list. 😌

I know I said I would start reading this over a month ago, but I haven’t picked it back up since. I just feel guilty about not reading all of the other books I said I would read! They deserve attention, too!

I feel guilty about a lot of things relating to my absence on here. But mostly about my growing TBR.

The Weight of the Stars, by K. Ancrum
Goodreads

A lot of other bloggers, whom I very much trust when it comes to recs, have recommended this book in several different places.

I really want to give it a try! (The MC also has basically the same name as me, so how could I not support that?)

Beneath the Citadel, by Destiny Soria
Goodreads

Another book I’ve had my eye on for a while, ever since a few of my favorite reviewers gave it good reviews.

Apparently, not a lot of people have read this one! Which is strange, because I know some of my favorite reviewers really liked it. So I’m very excited to read it, whenever I get the chance!

The Henna Wars, by Adiba Jaigirdar
Goodreads

I used to have an ebook copy from my library, but I wasn’t able to read it back then.

Now, hopefully I have enough time to actually enjoy it!

Maybe?

Vicious, by V.E. Schwab
Goodreads

I have never read a V.E. Schwab book (unless you want to count City of Ghosts and Tunnel of Bones) and I am determined to fix this immediately.

Everyone has been telling me to read this book for yeas, and it has such a beautiful cover. I must purchase it, but I’m not sure if I’m ready to commit yet. Will I love it? I’ll only buy it if I can be sure I will love it!

Artermis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer
Goodreads

Instead of posting about another MG fantasy series which I will not be referring to anymore for the foreseeable future (😒), I have decided to read the first Artemis Fowl book for the sole purpose of comparing it to the new Disney+ movie without a nostalgic bias.

I don’t have to buy this one, since I might not read the rest of the series and I can get it from my library, so that’s good! Although the new series covers do look very nice.

Nocturna, by Maya Motayne
Goodreads

I’ve been trying to read this one since January, and I have just not found the time at all.

I’m looking forward to it, but its 500 pages are a bit intimating right now, haha! (And what would I, a small Latinx blogger, ever do with myself if I didn’t read this book? The Latinx Fantasy book of my dreams?)

The Storm Crow, by Kalyn Josephson
Goodreads

I bought this book a few months ago, and I’ve been hyping myself up for it ever since. I’m determined to read it before a whole years goes by since my purchase!

I’m also very excited for this one, especially since there’s a sequel coming out soon! I’m terrible at keeping track of release dates, but I know it is coming soon.

Tarnished Are the Stars, by Rosiee Thor
Goodreads

Luckily, I found an audiobook from my library for this one, so I will not have to wait much longer to read it.

This is another books I have been longing to read for about a year. Here’s to hoping I can get to it soon!

The Poppy War, R.F. Kuang
Goodreads

I have heard so many good things about The Poppy War, and I’m so ready to read it already.

I’m prepared to get emotionally invested, which means I might have to read this series when I have time to read them back to back. Also, I have to wait until I can buy it, because these covers are gorgeous.

Siege and Storm, by Leigh Bardugo
Goodreads

I… already started to read this one, so I guess I’ll add it here at the last minute.

Last year, I bought the box set of the Shadow and Bone trilogy when I found out the there would be a Netflix adaptation, and because I want to be fully prepared when I start reading Six of Crows!

Yes, I am aware that I don’t need to read this series before SoC, but I already bought it. This is my punishment. No matter how much I do not want to, I must read these books because the money has already been foolishly spent, and I must meet Nikolai once and for all.

Untitled design-51.png

As someone who has only finished like 3 books since March, I am very nervous about this TBR. Although, I know if I read them, I will feel pretty accomplished!

In conclusion, I have felt nothing but stress by creating this TBR post. 😅 I better get back to reading.

  1. These are so awesome, and yes, Vicious!! It’s a pretty good book, and I know some people who had issues with it but still rated it pretty high, so I think there’s a good chance that you’ll love it or at the very least, enjoy it 🙂
The Poppy Wars is on my TBR too and I don’t remember the synopsis for it at all (bad memory alert!) but I do hope we both enjoy it!
    Happy reading ❤

    1. Thank you, Rukky! I’ve heard so many good things about Vicious, and I’m pretty excited to read it eventually! Even if I don’t love it, at least I tried, haha! Same, I don’t remember what The Poppy War is supposed to be about, but I know it’s dark, and I know I wanted to read it when I read the synopsis a long time ago. Happy reading to you, too!

  2. The Lightning Thief is on my TBR too 🙂 I didn’t read it as a kid, so trying to catch up with the rest of the book community! lol
Cinderella is Dead is one I really want to get to as well.

  3. I’ve seen so many people review The Lightening Thief lately that I’m starting to think that I should put it on my summer TBR. (It’s got to be a divine sign, right?)

The Poppy War is BRILLIANT … but also SUPER dark. If you’re OK with reading about war crimes, then would 10/10 recommend.

  4. Ok so I highly recommend The Poppy War. It’s one of my favorites but be warned, it is brutal, but oh so good. I enjoyed Nocturna and I loved Beneath the Citadel and you’re right, it is super underrated and deserves way more hype and promotion than it has gotten. So I totally recommend both of those as well. I also got a copy of Cinderella is Dead and have seen some amazing reviews for it so I’m hype.

    1. Thank you for pointing that out about The Poppy War! I will keep that in mine when I read it eventually. I’m glad you enjoyed Nocturna and Beneath the Citadel! That makes me more excited to read them. 🙂 I hope you also enjoy Cinderella is Dead!

  5. I really didn’t love Shadow and Bone and never read the third book, but Six of Crows is SO GOOD! I think it’s just going to suffer from people trying to read Shadow and Bone first and feeling meh before they get to Six of Crows.

I liked The Poppy War but definitely not as much as other people. I have no plans to read the second book. (Also I was confused by people calling The Poppy War dark for a while because it really isn’t until the second half of the book!)

    1. I’m only reading Shadow and Bone for a bit of background information before reading Six of Crows, and because of the impending Netflix show, haha! If I get tired of the Shadow and Bone series, I might just jump into Six of Crows without finishing it. I hope I like the Poppy War when I get to it, but if not, at least I tried.

  6. I have so many similar books to you: the wicker king, the weight of our stars, the poppy war, and the fever king (all these are on my tbr are from may talking about how great they are, oops) from this list I’ve read vicious which was was really addicting and enjoyable! I read the henna wars which I didn’t like at all and found quite boring 😦 I hope you enjoy all your reads on your TBR 💕

    1. I love that we have so many of the same books on our TBR, Ilsa! ❤ And I’m pretty sure I get a lot (or most) of my recs from May, haha! I’m glad you loved Vicious! I’m reading The Henna Wars right now and I really like it so far, which is strange bc I usually don’t read contemporary or romance, but hey, it’s working for me! Thank you, I hope you enjoy your TBR books as well ❤

  7. Happy reading and I hope you love all of these books!!💛 I want to read a lot of these too, especially Cinderella is Dead and You Should See Me in a Crown. I’ve never read any V.E. Schwab either?? Maybe this summer I’ll do that as well. I also want to read Siege and Storm- I have it checked out right now because I recently read Shadow and Bone, mostly because I loved SoC and wanted to have read it for the adaptation as well, haha.

  8. I love your summer TBR, it’s definitely a great idea to include so many choices 😊 I hope that you enjoy your two Arcs, I have been wanting to read the books as well, as they sound so good! I’m also going to read You Should See Me In A Crown soon, as I got the ebook and the cover alone gives off such positive vibes 🥰 I can highly recommend Vicious and The Fever King, though they’re a bit darker in tone, but ended up being so good!

  9. good luck with this TBR, Xandra!! ok i’m unbelievably jealous that you have an arc of Cemetery Boys 😡 i’m happy for you, but also in PAIN because i can’t possibly wait until June to read it! it sounds so good 😭😭 also, i want to want to read the Grisha trilogy too! i actually read Six of Crows (amazing, probably my fave book of all-time) without reading it, & though some things about the worldbuilding were confusing, it wasn’t too bad. but i want to read the Grisha trilogy for that extra background knowledge & also to meet Nikolai who everybody seems to love 😂

    1. Thank you, Caitlin! 😊 I’ve been excited for Cemetery Boys for such a long time, I’ve honestly been hyped since it was announced, and I was super excited and shocked when I got it! I just have to finish Cinderella is Dead before I get to it. 😅 I remember that Six of Crows is one of your faves, I really want to read it so I can discuss it with you and basically everyone else but… I think I’m going to read the Grisha trilogy first, since I already bought it! And yes I really need to meet Nikolai, everyone loves him for some reason and I need to know why!

  10. I just had a moment of realising Tarnished Are The Stars came out last year and now I’m not ok Xandra xD I want to read so many of these books too but I just…haven’t yet *sobs* Seige and Storm…I started that series read book 1 and was just not loving in to be honest. BUT I read it after having already read SoC and a lot of people say if you read SoC first you tend to prefer it over the Grisha Trilogy but I do definitely want to read the Grisha trilogy one day because I’d like more background info haha.

    1. Oh no, I just realised that too! 😂 So many books are getting released, and before I know it, they already have like 3 sequels and I still haven’t gotten to the first book yet! I didn’t really like Shadow and Bone either, but I’m reading it because I bought the trilogy box set and I feel like it’ll give me a good background foundation before I read Six of Crows and watch the Netflix show, whenever that releases!
