My Progress From The 24-Hour Readathon! // May 19, 2020

Well, friends… I did it.

The Readathon is complete! I had a lot of fun yesterday, and it was one of my most relaxing 24-Hour Readathons so far! (read: I didn’t fall asleep in any of my books!)

I also decided to post only once about this Readathon, rather than splitting it up into two parts! This was easier for me, and I think I like this better than making two parts.

MORNING:

5:30am – This morning, I woke up at 5:30! A bit later than usual for these readathons, but I just wanted more sleep.

And… as soon as I woke up, I heard a noise, and was suddenly very much afraid of the dark. 😅 Which lead me to create the day’s theme – mystery/thriller!

The first book I picked up was Jackaby by William Ritter. I actually started reading this book three years ago, but I had to return it to the library before I was done. I recently bought it from BookOutlet so I could try it again!

5:50am – This book… really felt like Sherlock Holmes and Fantastic Beasts. Jackaby has the deduction skills of Sherlock and the loftiness and wonder of Newt Scamander.

Also, there’s something very comfortable about it. It’s slow, but relaxing.

6:53am – Page 47. In my notes, I only wrote the word “fast”, but I’m not entirely sure what that was supposed to mean. 🤔 I think the readathon was just going by fast at that point!

Look at my cute cat mug! 😊

7:11-7:26am – I went downstairs, and started to make some coffee and breakfast. ☕️

9:30am – One of my college friends texted me about our final grades! I received my grades from this semester, and I’m proud to say this was actually my best semester ever! 😊🎉🎉 (I guess the blogging hiatuses really paid off, huh?)

9:55am – I switched to an audiobook of One of Us Is Next by Karen M. McManus so I could work on a discussion post for later!

I had already started this audiobook a few days ago, so I began at 10%.

10:18am – There were like 3 different conference calls going on downstairs, so I moved back upstairs to my room.

10:35am – Last week, I applied to several literary internships, and I just received a reply of interest this morning! 😊 It was all very exciting, and it also distracted me a bit.

11:34am – At this point, I realized that the post I was working on will not be complete for a while. 😅 Maybe Thursday!

On the bright side, I was at 33 % on One of Us Is Next!

Kind of like my experience with One of Us Is Lying, I was having trouble differentiating between the characters sometimes, but I think that was mostly me not paying attention enough. 😅

AFTERNOON:

12:00-1:30pm – My parents were so excited about my grades that they wanted to take me to pick up some lunch! (curbside, of course!)

1:45pm – I decided I would read The Hand on the Wall as my last book of the day, but I also realized that I didn’t remember much about the previous book, so I started to reread the last few chapters of The Vanishing Stair first.

This is the best picture I could get of it 😂

3:23pm – I was going back and forth between books, and I ended up at 47% on One of Us Is Next.

???-5:49pm – I stopped to watch a YouTube video for just 2 seconds… and then completely forgot I was doing a readathon, and proceeded to lose track of time. 😂

I have no idea how long I was gone! 5 minutes? 35 minutes? Who even knows?

But at this point, I was officially done with half of the readathon! Only 12 more hours to go! 😅

6:10pm – I decided to play some Animal Crossing while listening to One of Us Is Next! 😊

6:40pm – I was at 63% in One of Us Is Next, and I started to realize that I didn’t feel suspense until then?

I think I was a lot more invested in the first book than this one. One of Us Is Next felt like I was just going through the lives of these characters, and I was not really stressed out by whatever is happening. I liked it, but I wasn’t really concerned or anything until about 60%.

NIGHT:

7:20-9:20pm – We got dinner ready, and talked/relaxed. I probably should have been reading at this time, but I also got into a deep conversation about Disney with my sister, which threw me off a bit! Fun times.

I also had some tea! ☕️

1:08am – I finally finished On of Us Is Next and 🤯

After that, I went upstairs to finish Jackaby for the remainder of the night. (morning?)

1:30am – Believe it or not, I was not as tired as usual! Usually, at this point in the Readathon, I feel like I’m going to faint or something 😅 but I was doing okay!

2:20am – I finished Jackaby! 🤗 This marked the first time I had ever finished two books during the Readathon!

Although I had said I would eventually read The Hand on the Wall, I decided to end the Readathon on a positive note… and go to sleep. 😴 I was a little sleepy, not miserable, but I wanted some sleep!

  1. What a productive readathon. Congrats. I miss doing readathons. A driend and I used to have it every last weekend of the month. But during quarantine, we cant do it because of my anxiety. I can’t focus. But hopefully we can do it again this month. 🙂

  2. Congrats on your grades and the library internship! Omg the cover not being able to fully show on Adobe Digital Editions is SUCH a struggle. I had played Animal Crossing New Leaf for like 4 years until my 3DS broke, but it’s like my favorite game ever!! It makes me so happy to be seeing so many people playing New Horizons (even though I’m forever jealous I don’t have a Switch 😭😭) I saw your One of Us Is Next updates on Goodreads and they were so interesting to read ghjklhj. I need to read Karen McManus’ books but the last time I started One of Us is Lying I couldn’t get through it, but I’m willing to give it another try. And I’m so excited for Truly Devious!! I put it on hold at the library a few days ago, but I’m #24 on 3 copies so I’ll have to wait a while unfortunately. I’m glad you had fun during the readathon, Xandra!! I want to start doing readathons one day but I have terrible attention span so it wouldn’t go so great. 💖🥰

    1. Ah, thank you, Faith! I struggle so much with covers on Adobe Digital Editions, so it’s a good thing I rarely get ARCs or eBooks for there. 😅 I’ve never played any other Animal Crossing games! I used to have a DS but then I lost it, and I haven’t been able to play games for like 8 years. 😦 I hope you can get a Switch eventually!

It’s so funny that you saw my Goodreads updates, haha – I always feel like no one interacts with me over there! Thanks for reading them! One of Us is Lying was good, but only because I had very little experience with mystery books. (The most intriguing thing about it was the question of who the killer was, which I guessed very early on, and the relationship between Bronwyn and Nate, which I really like.) I highly recommend A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder if you can’t get into McManus’ books! Thank you so much for reading my readathon post! 💕

    1. Thank you, Caro! 😊 I’m so glad you enjoying reading my readathons!

Yes, I read Jackaby! I have been trying to read it for YEARS, and I finally got around to it! I’m glad it was your favorite book of the year so far – I really liked it too, and for some reason it felt very… comfortable? I liked the characters a lot, especially the dynamic between Jackaby and Abigail. 🙂

  5. This sounds like fun especially the deep Disney chat actually haha ! And congrats on the grades ❤
You do so well to stay awake for these and finishing two books is impressive. I am often reluctant to pick up mysteries as I never get connected to the characters but I'm glad One of Us is Lying picked up at 60% (very precise, love it) !! I need to check out Jackaby at one point !!
