Books I Own, But Have Never Read // don’t shame me for storing so many books under my bed, okay?

Don’t lie to me – I’m sure we all have a pile of unwanted-yet-purchased books in our living spaces. Right?

According to my bookshelf, most of the books I own have not been read. 😦 Most of them are still on my TBR, and they have been for over a year now. I almost never read books as soon as I purchase them, and now… I feel a bit guilty.

Let’s look at some of the books I’ve never read, but have owned for the longest amount of time.

Lord of the Rings trilogy

I really need to read this series! I’ve owned all of the books for about six years now, so I don’t know why it’s taking me so long to read them!

Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo

Honestly? 😂 I think I just picked this up because I thought the guy on the cover was cute. When I was twelve!

I started reading the first chapter, and let me tell you, this book is exactly what would happen if you put Harry Potter and Percy Jackson together, and then just… smashed your keyboard to get a series title. (I mean, Foo? Really??)

I pre-ordered this book back when the series was still a ~thing~, and… then I saw the reviews after it had been released into the world for only 7 hours, and I immediately knew what was wrong.

And then I put it on my shelf and never touched it again.

Bridge to Teribithia

My mom once bought me a copy of Bridge to Terabithia (although it wasn’t this pretty version I placed above). Since I liked the movie, I wanted to read the book but… I couldn’t stand the illustrations inside! 😂 They were so… strange!

Look at me, judging art styles since I was eleven.

 Six of Crows

I know, I know… I must read Six of Crows eventually!

I already own it, but since I also own The Grisha Trilogy, I’m going to read that first. I think it will be overall beneficially to my experience, and it couldn’t hurt to read them all before the Netflix adaptation! 🙂

Daughter of Smoke & Bone

I bought Daughter of Smoke & Bone at the same time as Strange the Dreamer, and I loved Strange the Dreamer and its sequel so much! I know I like Taylor’s writing style, and I’ll probably end up liking this book as well, but I just… haven’t found the time or motivation to read it yet. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  I just don’t feel like picking it up!

And… that’s all for today! Perhaps there will be a part two, since this list is not the half of it!

Sorry this post was a little late: my family is sheltering a beautiful orange cat while we look for his owner, and I’ve been following him around the house all day! 😊 He’s so fluffy and friendly!

REMINDER: Tomorrow is my first 24-Hour Readathon of the season! Tune in tomorrow to see how I’m doing!

Which books do you own, but have never read? Do you ever read your purchased books right away? I almost never do!

Chat with me about it!

  1. The same thing happened to me with Allegiant! I was so excited and the day it came out I was on tumblr and read all the spoilers and I was absolutely devastated and angry and decided not to read it even when I already had the kindle version. A week later I was with my best friend and she told me that her dad had just gotten her the hardcover and instead of staying quiet, I absolutely spoiled the book for her to and she still to this day has not read it either lol

  2. I feel exactly the same way about Allegiant! The ending was spoiled for me right before I was about to read it, and I haven’t touched it since because I know I’ll be disappointed—which is sad, because I loved the first two books! 😅

  3. I used to own a bunch of books I hadn’t read. Eventually I donated many of them because I realized I was never going to read them and they could probably be used by someone else! It was hard to let go, but I reasoned I could just go to the library if I wanted to read them later.

  4. I only got around to finishing The Lord of The Rings trilogy this year, after it had been sitting on my TBR shelves for year and years lol. It’s now got a new home on my read shelves. 🙂

  5. I’m totally the same as you! I have around 200 unread books on my shelves/kindle and I am so bad for picking them up. Some great books on your list, I hope you enjoy them when you get round to reading 😊

  6. Oh, I relate to this post so much! I’ve just been going through all the books I own and trying to weed out the ones I don’t even want to read (Why did I buy them? We may never know…). The only time I read books immediately after purchasing is when I’ve already started reading them in the bookshop! 🙈

  7. I keep my physical TBR in a guilt pile so I have to tackle it before it topples over 😂
I’m like you though in that I never like reading them as soon as I’ve brought them. Which is such a weird thing?!
But I’m normally pretty good at keeping on top of it & always have my Christmas purge where I dedicate November & December to finishing off books I own 💕

  8. I have a lot of owned books that I have been meaning to read but never got around to as well 😅 Daughter of Smoke and Bone is among them! I got the entire Trilogy because everyone has loved the books so much, but I haven’t read them yet 😱

  9. Oh, I had the DOSAB trilogy, or at least the first book in the trilogy for a couple of years before I read it. So glad I waited for the entire trilogy to be out before reading though as I devoured the whole lot in a single week!!

  10. Hi Xandra!! I’ve missed you! I honestly have way too many unread books on my shelf. It’s quite pathetic, but I’m convinced that if I stare at my shelf long enough, I’ll read them all eventually. lol! I highly recommend you read The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Six of Crows! Both are some of my favorite books ever! I remember my copy of Bridge to Terabithia having odd illustrations as well, but it’s actually a really cute little book! 🙂

  11. Sometimes I pre-order a book because I’m super excited, but then the book lays on my shelves for months. WHY are we like this???? I think the book I own that I’m most excited to read is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but I don’t know why I haven’t done it yet. I blame my mood reading.

  12. Whoops I’m guilty for this too! I have The Bone Season and The Buried Giant on my shelf for a while too, I hope I can read them this year!

This is such a problem for me as currently, I don’t have enough space so I’ve been tracking my book buying ban more strictly haha.
