Ranking my experiences with Adam Silvera books! // aka, mini reviews

It’s no secret that I have been screaming about, crying about, and shoving all of Adam Silvera’s books into the arms of unsuspecting strangers at the library since I read More Happy Than Not when it was first published.

Adam Silvera was the first Latinx author I had ever read a book by. As a Latina girl who loves books and also loves to write, this was and is still important to me. That, and also the fact that all of his books give me more emotions than the next, is why I love to read his books.

Today, good friends, I present to you… a ranking of my wonderful experiences with Adam Silvera’s books!

I will also rate each book by a rating of the love interest/romance in the story, the level of my own personal heartbreak, and the overall rating I give the novel. Every rating is measured on a scale of 1 to 5.

Here are some mini reviews, and rankings of Adam Silvera’s previous works (not including What If It’s Us, because that one was written with Becky Abertalli). However, these opinions are my own! This is not a real measure of how you should feel when you read the books. But if you agree with me, that’s awesome! 🙂

I had the absolute privilege of reading this book back when Adam Silvera was a debut author. Back then, I accidentally stumbled upon this book, and I’m so glad that I did.

I flew through MHTN in one single day. I was hooked from the beginning, and my emotions were a mess about 50% of the time.

This was one of the first books that really made me cry. I mean, it was the kind of sobbing you experience after you’ve finished an amazing book and you’re really sad that it’s over.

I wish I could experience it again without knowing what was going to happen next, because the twists in this book were so good! So unpredictable! It was heart-wrenching and sad, but I loved it. A very good book. I must reread it as soon as I can!

History Is All You Left Me

As soon as I found out this book was available for purchase, I bought it and read it very swiftly. Which was probably a bad idea, because within the 3 days it took me to read it, I was under a massive emotional rollercoaster like I had never experienced before.

It was quite strange, actually. In one scene I would be laughing, and in the next scene, I would be crying my eyes out. I usually don’t cry in a book until the story is over, but I cried a total of 5 times over the course of this book. My heart actually hurt, as though I had just been in a car accident or something. It was interesting, and strange. But also satisfying to know a book could do that to me.

I could tell that the story was very personal to the author. I really enjoyed the OCD representation, especially because it was shown in a way which doesn’t often show in YA books, and because it is something Silvera relates to.

Now, I will admit that the main character, Griffin, is a very flawed character. He makes mistakes, some of which are troubling. Sometimes, I found myself looking down on him like a disapproving mother, but perhaps this is a good thing. Not every character can be Mr. Perfect all of the time.

I understand why some people have problems with Griffin’s actions, and his decisions are probably what lead me to feel so broken in the first place.

They Both Die At The End

Despite my extreme love for this book’s theme and the suspense it gave me throughout, my main complaint was that this book’s plot was a bit less complex than the others.

And yes, as you may have suspected, there is a slight insta-love aspect here (or more like I’ve-known-you-for-the-past-several-hours-and-we’re-friends-now love), but there’s kind of a reason for it.

TBDATE features chapters told from different points of view, usually from either of the main characters, but occasionally from other characters, as well. I personally loved this, because I enjoy learning about a character’s inner thoughts and motivations.

While MHTN is (slightly) in the Science Fiction genre, I would say that this book is more so. TBDATE is more SciFi, and if you like The Arc of the Scythe series, this book has a similar concept!

All I remember about the ending of this book was that I read the last page and absolutely melted. And then I proceeded to be emotional about it for the next several days.

Romance: ♥️♥️♥️♥️

FINAL RANKING

#1: More Happy Than Not

This one will always have a special place in my heart. Although it was Adam Silvera’s first published book, I also think it’s his best. 5 out of 5, 10 out of 10.

#2: They Both Die At The End

A sweet, interesting novel about what would happen if we knew when we were going to die. Not as heavy as the other two (if you can even believe that?), but suspenseful and thought-provoking.

#3: History Is All You Left Me

While this one made me the most emotional, I also didn’t know what to feel. Was I sad? Angry? Pleased? To all of these questions, yes. This book was emotional, but I just don’t think it’s for everyone. Sometimes it was frustrating, and devastatingly so. (I still loved it, but perhaps I wouldn’t reread it.)

If you haven’t read any of his books yet, but you plan on reading them all, I suggest you start from his oldest and read them chronologically! But if you only want to read the best, I hope this ranking will help you choose which ones to read! 😊

  1. All of Adam’s books are so beautiful and heartbreaking 😭 I think my favorite is actually History Is All You Left Me (unpopular opinion!), partly bc the main character DOES make so many mistakes, and I love messy characters haha. This is a great post – I loved reading all your thoughts on these books!

Also, are you excited for Infinity Son???

    1. I agree, my hearts breaks a little more with every one of his books! 😭 (But it’s okay because, as readers, we’re used to it!) I really enjoyed History Is All You Left Me as well, but while reading I often felt like my heart was literally broken and scarred, and there were a couple of things in it that made me dislike some of the romance, but I love that the characters are so real and messy! And thank you!

YES of course I’m excited for Infinity Son!! (By now, I actually have an eARC of it, and it’s okay? But I heard that my heart will get broken later on, so I must be prepared!)

  2. K so on your Goodreads it said ask you about Remus and you’ll never stop talking.

Well I’m here to ask you about Remus.

WHO DO YOU SHIP HIM WITH AND WHAT ABOUT TEDDY WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HIM???

I wish Teddy was in anything HP. Like, have lines, yknow? And I ship Remus with Tonks. *always*

Anyway is he one of your fave HP characters?? (Have you seen his popfigure??? I have two of them)

Sorry Remus is obviously… UGH. (I even named my cat after him)

    1. Beck!! I’m sorry this is so late, haha, but don’t do this to me!! We’ll be here for far too long!!

      But my answers are:
      – I ship Remus with Tonks because I believe they were in love and they’re very cute, but I also ship wolfstar under certain circumstances (although I feel like if Remus and Sirius were ever actually in love, it would have been more obvious, lol)
      – I love Teddy! I wish we could have more information about him! (and I’m so upset that he wasn’t in The Cursed Child!!) I actually named one of the characters in my book after him!
      – But YES Remus was my favorite HP character (and my favorite character of all time!) for at least 5 years, but now he’s my 2nd favorite because I love Harry so much more than I did back then

Haha thanks for doing this! I never thought anyone would actually pay attention to my Goodreads page!

  3. Thanks for the helpful recs! I’d heard that They Both Die in the End is slightly disappointing compared to Silvera’s others works, which is a shame because the concept sounded super cool, but then I’ll started with More Happy than Not! I am TOTALLY here for emotional ruin. 😀 Terrific post! ❤

    1. Thank you! 😀 And I agree, They Both Die At The End was good, but not as heartbreaking as the others can be. But it all depends on preference, and what you’re looking for in a book. 🙂 I hope you really enjoy whichever one you read!

(Also, this is very random but I started watching Over the Garden Wall for the first time, and I can tell you right now that I am 100% a Wirt person so far.)

  4. This is such a clever idea and I love it!! So far, I’ve read MHTN and TBDATE and I think I liked the latter more. It might be because it was the first Adam Silvera book I ever read or maybe because it just hit me so hard with all the emotions?? Whatever the reason, I loved it so much. 😍I don’t really remember MHTN too much, so I think I should reread it soon, especially since I own it. I’m hoping to read HIAYLM and What If It’s Us soon. Lovely post!

    1. Thanks, Olivia! 😊 I love all of Adam’s books, but all for different reasons! They’re generally different, and his upcoming Infinity Cycle series is especially different! I hope you enjoy HIAYLM, and I can’t wait to see what you think of it! 🙂

  5. ahhh, sadly I didn’t love History is All You Left Me when I first read it, but I really think that it was just my expectations. You have made me way more interested in More Happy Than Not though, because its premise is pretty interesting! also, a book has never made me feel that way and now I’m very intrigued!

    1. That’s okay, I totally understand that HIAYLM is not for everyone. It’s kind of intense and can be uncomfortable/strange sometimes. But I hope you really like More Happy Than Not whenever you decide to read it! I can’t wait to see what you think of it! 🙂

  6. This was such a good idea!
I’ve never read more happy than not but I’ve read the others & had varying experiences with them. Like, I loved they both die at the end so much it was SO SAD 😭 but I didn’t really enjoy history is all you left me that much :/
I’ve also put what if it’s us on hold in my library & I really want to read it over the summer! 💕💕

  7. Omg Xandra, this is the post I’ve always needed – I’m ashamed to say I’ve never picked up Adam Silvera’s books because I know they’re notoriously heartbreaking & I feel like I need to be in the right headspace to read them? But this post is perfect, I’m definitely aiming to read at least one of these before the year ends!

  8. I really need to read some Adam Silvera books as I have heard a lot of good things but also that I should be ready to get very emotional– I love that you have included a heartbreak rating 😂
More happy than not is the one that I am probably most excited to read which has been made truer from reading this post– it sounds amazing!!
My library has the audiobook they both die at the end so I am hoping to pick this one up soon as experience his books. I am definitely interested in so I’m excited!!
Great post– I also excited for his next book infinity son as well because I love superheroes 😍!!

    1. If you’re an easily emotional person, you should definitely be prepared for some heartbreak! And haha, thanks Sophie!

I hope you really enjoy More Happy Than Not! I really liked it when I first read it, and I think I’ll be doing a reread soon! 😊

  9. I absolutely adore Adam Silvera, the only one of his books I haven’t read yet is More Happy Than Not. After seeing your glowing review I think I need to get to it sooner – it’s on my shelf, I just haven’t read it yet. History Is All You Left Me is my favourite of his, I totally get what you mean about crying like 5 times while reading it, I was exactly the same. Great post celebrating a great author! ❤

  10. A couple of his books are on my TBR but I didn’t have MHTN on there! Wow! Just added it & definitely making it a higher priority to read. Congratulations on making it through to the final round of the awards! I wish I had been around sooner to vote for you, you totally deserve it!!! ♡

  11. Lovely reviews, Xandra! I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t read ANYTHING by Adam Silvera before! *cue horror movie scream* I’ve been meaning to get to them for some time, but they always tend to escape my attention! I’ll be sure to read them in chronological order when I do tackle them! ❤

  12. I definitely agree with your rankings, Xandra!! I honestly can’t decide which is my favorite from Adam — I think I actually might have loved TBDATE more than MHTN (I certainly cried more over it haha), but also I just have an overwhelming amount of love for MHTN when I read it in 2017! My least favorite is definitely HIAYLM, though, since I didn’t like it that much at all 😅 Lovely post! (Thanks for making me want to reread MHTN AAAHHH 😭💖)
