BOOK TAG ✨ Books I’ll Probably Never Read

Hello friends, I hope your week is off to a great start so far!

My week is going well, and (for the first time since March!) I am finally reading a book! I started reading Strange the Dreamer a few days ago, and I really am enjoying it so far. 🙂

I was tagged a long time ago (in February) by InkGirlWords! Thank you so much for tagging me, and sorry it took so long for me to do it!

1) a really hyped book you’re not interested in reading:

Hmm… I’m not sure how to answer this one.

There are a lot of books out there which I don’t feel like reading… (Also, I think I’ve been gone for so long that I can’t remember what was popular or not)

I have heard a lot about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and although it sounds good… I’m still not so sure about reading Adult books, y’know?

I’m very comfortable with reading YA, thank you very much. I mostly read YA because I am currently writing my WIPs in YA, and because, truth be told, I am most definitely a Young Adult.

I have nothing against The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but I don’t think I’ll read it any time soon.

2) a series you won’t start/won’t be finishing:

The Mortal Instruments series seems to be, how should I say… not exactly my cup of tea.

I have a few personal friends who have told me that there are way too many books / characters in this series, and because the first books were written so long ago, the style is not as good as some of Cassandra Clare’s newer books.

I also know I will never finish The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry. While I love The Giver, I have heard that the next books are not really connected to each other and are nowhere near as interesting as the first book.

3) a classic you’re not interested in:

I’m actually not interested in most classics, if we’re being totally honest here.

But while I could see myself eventually reading a lot of “classics”, I can’t see any reason for me to ever read Moby Dick. I’ve heard it’s very long and probably boring, but hey, what do I know? I haven’t read it yet.

4) a genre you never read:

I think I read from most genres, so… this question is a bit difficult.

But I don’t really like Romance. There’s just something about the plot being nothing but “I really want to get with this guy/girl but someone/something is in my way, oh whatever will I do???” vibe that really turns me off from this genre.

Of course, not every Romance novel is like this, and I actually do like romance as a plot device, but only when it’s also included with fantasy elements, or adventure elements, or something other than just that “I’m so sad that I’ve been chasing after this Bad Boy and nothing is happening the way I want to” nonsense.

5) a book on your shelves you’ll probably never actually read:

Hold on while I get up from my comfy spot to check on my shelves.

*upon my return* Well, I have a few.

I bought Allegiant as soon as it was released, but then, I almost immediately decided I would never actually read it because of all the negative reviews it got that very same day.

Just to be sure, I tried to read a few pages of it. But nope, sure enough, I didn’t even like the beginning, and I knew I would not like ending.

I believe my mother bought me A Wrinkle in Time when I was a lot younger, because she heard it was a modern classic or something. Which is fair, because I know a lot of people had to read this book.

But I did not like the first few chapters. I even started to reread it for the recent Disney reboot movie, but it was just… not for me.

I tag…

I’m tagging Winged Cynic and Sophie, but if you would like to do this tag, go ahead!

No worries if either of you have already done this tag or don’t feel like doing it!

Should I change my mind about any of these? What are some of the books you don’t think you’ll ever read?

Let me know, and chat with me about it!

  1. Okay I understand your reasoning for not wanting to read Evelyn Hugo….but you should read it anyway because it’s AMAZING. It’s not a boring adult book! But yeah, I don’t see myself ever finishing The Mortal Instruments series either, and Moby-Dick is definitely something I’ll NEVER pick up unless forced.

  2. I hope you enjoy strange the dreamer – I loved it so much when I read it & am currently reading muse of nightmares (don’t worry, no spoilers 😂)

  3. I completely agree with you on romances! I just can’t hack a full book just about romance, as a side plot yes but as the entire thing mehhh it’s just a bit predictable!

  4. Ooh, thank you so much for this tag! I’m rather picky about my which tags I end up doing, but you actually picked one that I’m super eager to do. ❤

Love your picks btw! I don’t plan on reading Cassie Clare, Moby Dick I’ve heard is dreadfully boring, and yes, I’m not sure if I’d recommend finishing The Giver quartet either; I actually rather enjoyed Books 2 and 3, but Book 4 was suuuuch a disappointing mess that I threw it across the room after finishing it. 😂

Of your list though, I do plan on reading Evelyn Hugo and Wrinkle in Time; I just gotta find out what the ruckus is about with those. 😉 Excellent post!

    1. Thank you! And you’re welcome! I can’t wait to see your answers! 😊

And yeah, I have thought about finishing the Giver quartet, but I don’t want to be disappointed like that! I’d rather just read something else! 😂

Let me know what you think about Evelyn Hugo if you read it soon – I might just give it a try!

  5. I have to push Evelyn as well. It’s a life changing book, it’s brilliant and not in a boring kind of enlightening type of way lol Maybe think about it at a later date – just don’t give up on it completely! I’m never going to even pick up Divergent I don’t think lol

  6. Yes the mortal instruments is a series I will never read– I know quite a bit about them and I am not overly bothered about reading them. But I might try the infernal devices one day!! 😊
Yes I rarely read classics myself either. Most of them don’t appeal to me at all!!
And I agree with the things you said about romance– that used to be my exact problem with them and I prefer romance in fantasy settings. But at the moment I have been craving some contemporary romance books so I will see if I have changed my mind 😂
And I have certainly heard a lot of bad things about allegiant– the ending doesn’t sound good!!
Thank you so much for the tag– I would absolutely give it a go!! 💛

    1. I’m not really sure if I will ever read anything from Cassandra Clare, since it sounds like you should read her more recent series after the older ones. I rarely enjoy reading classics, but I don’t think I’ve ever finished a classic on my own, without the force of school… there are a few classics I’d like to try sometime, but not right now!

Sometimes I’m in the mood for a book including romance, but I don’t like reading strictly romance books, mostly because they’re too predicitable for me! Can’t wait to see your answers! 🙂

  7. Okay I’m just going to repeat what everyone else has said and say read Evelyn Hugo!!! It honestly doesn’t read like an adult novel. Evelyn is a young adult for most of it, and the other narrator is in her twenties (I think? maybe early thirties). So it reads a lot like an older YA book, and much less like most “adult” fiction novels.

But I totally agree about romances! They’re not really my thing

  8. We actually share the same opinions on a lot of these books lol, so I can’t really advise differently. But at least you know yourself well enough to not bother reading something you simply don’t want to read.

I am hesitant to touch any classics other than Frankenstein because I already knew I loved it from high school.

    1. Frankenstein is one of my favorite classics, and I read it once while in high school and once while in college. There are a few other classics which worked well for me, such as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Fahrenheit 451. Otherwise, it is difficult to enjoy classics when I prefer to read more recent novels!

  9. Great tag! I have similar answers with no interest in the shadowhunter books and not wanting to read adult romances. I do think that A Wrinkle in Time is a really good children’s classic. I read it in elementary school and remember liking it, but I’m not sure how it would hold up as an adult

    1. Yeah, I don’t really like to read romances in general, just because they tend to be predictable :/

I did not get very far with A Wrinkle in Time, but it was just not my cup of tea. I could see why some people like it, but I just didn’t see myself finishing it!

  10. I remember liking Gathering Blue quite a bit, but the others were just… weird and disjointed. I don’t blame you for not wanting to give them a try.

  11. So fun reading your answers, Xandra. I totally know what you mean about the Romance genre. I’ll probably never read a Nicholas Sparks novel even though I love all the films. 😛

  12. I keep seeing Evelyn Hugo mentioned everywhere lately so I am planning to pick it up but, like you, I still am somewhat hesitant for some reason (and I have so many other books that I desperately want to read so I don’t know exactly when I’ll get to it). I love Cassandra Clare’s books though. She is meant to be writing something that’s completely unrelated to the Shadowhunter World but I have no idea when that will be out. And I completely agree with you about classics; I feel like I should read them but I’m not exactly in a rush to do so. I guess if I had to pick one that I’d never read it would probably end up being something by William Shakespeare. I just feel like the stories that are being told are probably really interesting but I just can’t get on with the way that they’re written.

  13. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has an NA feel to it but it’s not really that far off in my opinion. I personally do not read a lot of NA but I definitely enjoyed the plot of this one, it’s very unique for me.

  14. I can agree with you on everything else except Allegiant! Okay, I might’ve read this back in middle school, but I remember the ending was unbelievable (not a happy one at all). Regardless, I didn’t think it was TERRIBLE. Also, is Four the 4th book of series? Or is it something else?

  15. THis is so fun. I likely won’t ever read – or watch – Game of Thrones and I haven’t read The Hunger Games. I can no longer keep any book I don’t like. And I have never read most classics, unless they are children’s books.

  16. I love your list! I agree, I own Allegiant, but will probably never open it.
I did really like some of the Mortal Instruments and definitely would recommend the first few. Overall it’s a good series, but it does get complicated and a bit confusing. I’m curious how the TV series handles it because I bet it would do well on screen!
    Thanks for sharing!
