Who Am I? Book Tag

Here’s a fun book tag! You can now get to know me through my bookish habits and preferences!

I was tagged by Allie @ The Hufflepuff Nerdette! Thanks again for tagging me! 😊

QUESTION 1:
IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK GENRE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Well, considering my life is looking suspiciously very similar to Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell… I’ll go with contemporary.

But if I had to choose an ideal genre to live in, I would choose modern fantasy, like in The Darkest Part of the Forest and The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black. 😉

QUESTION 2:
WHAT VILLAIN FROM A BOOK DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE MOST?

Does Cardan count as a villain? Because I was just telling myself the other day that I mysteriously relate to him somehow (don’t ask me how, okay? Let’s just accept it.)… and I think I’ve already mentioned that in a post somewhere, so… 😅

But if I had to choose a real, actual villain… *thinks for a little bit* I honestly can’t come up with anything. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess I just don’t read many books with real villains!

QUESTION 3:
WHAT PROTAGONIST ARE YOU MOST SIMILAR TO?

Ooooh, this is a tough one.

I often say that I relate to Frances from Radio Silence, but also Harry Potter for many strange reasons.

QUESTION 4:
WHICH BOOK DID YOU CONNECT WITH IN THE PAST THAT YOU NO LONGER DO?

When I first read the Legend series by Marie Lu, I loved it so much. I binge read the whole series within two weeks, which was really fast for me at the time because I was a lot younger and it happened during the school year. I cried when the series ended, and I was so in love with the whole thing.

But now that I look back on the series… I see its flaws, and little things that I would criticize now if I read it today. Due to the new sequel book, I may or may not reread the series, but I probably won’t like it as much as the first time.

QUESTION 5:
WHAT RECENT BOOK READ WOULD YOU LOVE TO BE A CHARACTER IN?

Oh gosh, it’s been so long since I’ve read a book, I – I’ll have to consult Goodreads for this one.

*5 minutes later*

Out of the few books I’ve read this year, I think I would like to be a character in Brandon Sanderson’s Skyward.

Although not everyone connects with the main character Spensa, I feel like I do! I think I could have made an appearance or two as one of her friends. I probably would have gotten along with Rodge pretty well. I could see us three being great friends, haha! Just a bunch of misfits, but still good friends.

QUESTION 6:
HOW DO YOUR READING HABITS SHOW OFF YOUR PERSONALITY?

Um, I guess they do? Sometimes?

I usually take forever to read a book. Either that, or I’ll read it all in 2 days. I guess that kind of reflects on the fact that I’m all over the place! You never know what I’m going to do, or how it will get done! But I will eventually make it happen 🙂

I’m also one of those people who absolutely cannot have a single wrinkle or crease on a book. It pains me to accidentally crush a page, especially if it’s one of my favorite books. But when it comes to school books, I’ll just do whatever the heck I want. 🤣

I suppose that just means that I like to be careful with everything that I own. If I’m going to keep it for a long time, I want it to be in good condition!

QUESTION 7:
WHAT BOOK TAUGHT YOU SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF?

I don’t necessarily think any books taught me something about myself, but some of them did point out how I feel about certain subjects.

For example… (I’m so afraid to talk about this, ahhhh) Rick Riordan’s The House of Hades was the first book I ever read with an LGBT+ character, and I was completely shocked. I was pretty young when I read it, but finding out about this character’s identity impacted me so much. I was literally in shock for about three days after I finished it, and I just couldn’t understand why I felt this way. Part of it had to do with the character, but part of it was also just understanding what that meant for the story and how I interpreted it. I don’t remember where I was going with this anecdote, but long story short, I’m not “afraid” of reading books with other representations. When I was younger, it was just strange to me because I realized that, up until then, most of the characters I read about had been pretty much the same.

Reading diverse books has taught me about the different kinds of people in the world, and that books should be more diverse, so that even younger people can learn about others.

Also! I have read a few books with characters who like to write, and that’s encouraging as well! I love to write, and I like to see characters with similar interests to me. That’s always nice, too.

  1. Thank you so much for tagging me!! I don’t know if I have an answer for some of the questions, but we’ll see! ❤ Thanks again Xandra!

P.S. I noticed the tiny changes 😉 It looks great!!

  2. Living in a modern fantasy world like that in the Folk of the Air series would be SO FUN! But, I would have to be a Faerie, because I’m fairly certain I’d die as a human among the savage magical beings. lol. I read Legend way back in the day as well, and don’t think I’d like it nearly as much if I read it now. I do like Marie Lu as an author, but haven’t been blown away by anything of her’s yet.

    Great post! 🙂

    1. Modern fantasy worlds are so interesting to me, because we could be living in one /right now/ and we would just never know! 😉 Knowing that Faeries exist would be so cool, but you’re right, I don’t think I would last very long in their territory.

Even though I read Legend a while ago, I am still thinking about rereading it, just to see what the experience would be now, since I would like to think my taste in books has matured since then. 🙂

  3. This is such a cool tag! 😀 My life definitely resembles Cath’s in Fangirl in many ways, so I’d probably be a contemporary as well. And I also relate to Frances from Radio Silence SO MUCH. Living in the world of Skyward would probably be very stressful but also very cool. And I love your story about reading House of Hades for the first time! I can relate in a lot of ways 👀

    1. Thank you, it was a fun tag to do! 🙂 Sometimes I relate to Cath and Frances a little too much, but maybe that’s why those characters are so good in the first place. Living in the Skyward universe would be so scary, but I think it could also be fun! I would probably just like to sit back and watch the air fights happen from below. 😂

  4. Ahh thanks for tagging me! I have no idea when I’m going to be able to get around to this though, so don’t be surprised if I do this like, ten months later. *groans* School is kicking my butt.

Also, House of Hades was the first book I read with an LGBT+ character too! I love Rick Riordan for how diverse he’s made his books – or, well, how he’s slowly making his books more diverse. (PJO didn’t really start out as diverse, but his later series have so many marginalized characters!!)

And Legend was also a series younger-me loved to death!!! I’m also thinking about rereading it because of her fourth book coming out (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and I’m curious as to what I’ll think of it now? I hope I still love it!!

Happy reading and have a good day Xandra!!

    1. You’re welcome, but don’t feel pressured to do it if you’re overwhelmed! I’m personally about 5 months behind with my 20 tags I have to do, just because this semester at school has been so stressful for me. But that’s okay, we can get through this!

I’m very glad that Rick Riordan is starting to make his books a lot more diverse, because it’s important for young kids to start learning about other people at a young age, and it’s also important for them to see themselves represented in books which are so special for younger readers.

Let me know if you decide to reread Legend after all, I might want to read it with you! I don’t think I’ll like it as much as before, but I would be willing to see it from a different perspective now, especially while comparing it to the new book. 🙂

  5. I love how you talk about how reading diversely has opened you up to different perspectives from your own, and it is really weird to think about how white and same most of the books that I read were up until a few years ago.

I’d totally want to live in a space opera, I think! I love space and have been obsessed with it for as long as I could remember. I am an adventurer at heart and would love to be able to travel among the stars. Great post!

    1. Reading House of Hades definitely opened my perspective to reading books which were more diverse, even though it was a bit out of my comfort zone at the time. There are just so many different types of people in the world, that it would be a bit unrealistic if we didn’t read diversely nowadays.

I love space, too, because it’s so vast and mysterious! Just the idea of traveling in space makes me so happy! 🙂 Thank you, and thanks for stopping by!

  6. It’s so sad when you realise that one of your favourite books/series when you were younger isn’t as good as you thought 😢
And I’m the same with keeping care of your books – I once spilled water on a book and was SO UPSET! But it actually looks kinda cool ‘cause it was a book about alchemy so it kinda goes with the theme? 😂

    1. It can be sad to realize that you don’t like a book as much as you did before, but for me that’s okay, because it’s alright to grow as a reader. 🙂

And I have spilled water on some of my books before too, and I once even accidentally broke an old paperback in half! 😂

  7. Fantasy because as anyone who knows me know I don’t like reality. Don’t identify with any villains but my favorite heroes are those with the same Myers-Briggs as I am – Luke Skywalker (though I’ve also seen him described as somewhat different type), Frodo, Faramir, BBC Merlin. Take me to the Shire! Leave me alone, I’m reading. LOTR taught me a lot.

    1. Fantasy is great because it’s often so different from the world we live in today. And I identify closely with Luke Skywalker and Merlin, too! It’s so much easier for me to indentify with heroes because that is just closer to my personality.

  8. Xandra, I think it’s so great that reading a book with a queer character made you more open to read about different rep! I think it’s pretty normal to be shocked when reading about something like that; I was shocked too, especially because I didn’t expect it, knowing this character for so long. I think it just shows how much diverse reads are important, because they can truly impact us on being more open to different people!
Thank you so much for sharing! This is one of my favorite tags to read! 😊

    1. I was very shocked by the queer rep in House of Hades, mostly because I didn’t expect it at all from that character. (I’m still a little surprised, because I honestly don’t think Rick Riordan intended for the character to have this character arc from the beginning, but at least I’m glad he included it eventually.)

And thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the post!

  9. What book hasn’t taught me something about myself, that’s the real question. Unless I stop at ten pages in, I usual learn something. (Thank you, books.)

I’m sorry, I have to do it. How do you relate to Cardan? Are you mysterious? Do you quietly pine for a love interest? Do you … have a tail?! I bet it’s the tail.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Of course, I learn so much from books! And even if I don’t learn anything while reading a particular book, at least I probably had fun while reading it.

And um, I thought I was very clear about not questioning my relation to Cardan? I may or may not have a tail. You’ll never know. Nice try, Sha.

(But actually, the truth is that I am kind of bossy and sarcastic, not really good at anything in particular, and people often don’t know what I’m thinking. I also have good intentions but sometimes they just don’t work out and I might get betrayed or something 🤷‍♀️ And of course I would love to be royalty. Let’s not forget about that.)

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes, that is the most important! As long as a book is enjoyable, then it was worth the read.

Nooooo. This is going to haunt me. I guess I’ll just have to picture you with a tail. *shrug*

(Ah, I see. I accept this answer, but also add that you are very good at formatting and design — your blog looks stunning — and writing. All your blog posts are fun to read, and clear and to the point.)

  10. Fantastic post! I am totally in the same boat with you about Rick Riordan. I don’t love his Heroes of Olympus series, but that LGBTQ_ rep towards the end was pretty shocking to me too. I think it was a time when LGBTQ+ rep was pretty scarce in popular books, so Rick will always be someone I admire for normalizing that.

Btw, I relate to you with Fangirl – I feel like that’s one book where everyone sees themselves in Cath. Also, I am currently reading Skyward, and I’m liking it so far! I actually relate to this MC the most out of all of Sanderson’s protagonists. 😉

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thank you! The rep in House of Hades was surprising, but I think it was a good choice for Rick Riordan to include it in such a widely read series, especially for the younger audience.

Even though I don’t like to admit it, I am very much like Cath! And I’m glad I’m not the only one. If you’re still reading Skyward, I hope you really like it! Let me know what you think when you finish it!

      Liked by 1 person

  11. I think it’s wonderful that you started to read more diversely because of Rick Riordan!! I also completely agree that my life would be a contemporary genre too. I think Fangirl is such a fitting book to describe the everyday school life.

I’m currently rereading the Legend trilogy, and I completely relate to what you’re saying. I was so obsessed with the series when I was younger, but now that I’m rereading it, I don’t love it AS much. This was such a fun post, and I loved learning a bit more about you, Xandra!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I think my life would definitely be a contemporary, only because it’s too normal to be anything else!

I am still thinking about rereading Legend to prepare for the new book, but I don’t think I’ll like it as much. I don’t remember anything being wrong with it, but for me, I think it’s just okay. Thank you, I’m glad you liked the post, Tiffany! 🙂
