Reasons Why I Am Basically Harry Potter ⚡️

Despite the fact that Harry Potter is a fictional male character born in the early 1980s and I am a very real Muggle female born in the late 1990s, I think that Harry and I have too many similarities to pass up making a blog post about it.

When people often ask me why I like Harry so much (I mean, he’s essentially my favorite character ever), I usually say something along the lines of, “Well, he’s just a really relatable character”. But recently I’ve realized that there are so many things going on in Harry’s life, that some people might find that answer either very concerning or highly confusing. So here I am to set the records straight and explain exactly why I relate to Harry so much!

I’m always the last person to know about things.

There’s this joke in the HP fandom that Harry is the most unobservant person ever, and while I agree… sometimes people just don’t tell Harry anything. It’s not always his fault!

I feel like that a lot. Probably too often.

Sometimes, for example, my friends or family members will just assume that I know about an upcoming event and just not tell me! So I just never find out until the day of the event! Other times, I won’t find out about certain pop culture trends or phrases until the trend is already over, which usually just makes me very confused (like what does yeet even mean??).

In general, I guess I’m also pretty unobservant. I’ve got my own things to worry about (for Harry it’s Voldemort, and for me it’s school stuff), so I’m usually too busy thinking about what I have to do next to survive!

I’m smart, but only in specific subjects.

Okay okay, sure – I have “good grades” in most of my classes, but there’s always one class in which I really excel.

“Do you mean ter tell me… that this boy—this boy!—knows nothin’ abou’—about ANYTHING?”
Harry thought this was going a bit far. He had been to school, after all, and his marks weren’t bad.
“I know some things,” he said. “I can, you know, do math and stuff.”

For Harry, that’s Defense Against the Dark Arts. I mean, he defeated Voldemort as a baby for crying out loud! Aside from that, Harry is significantly better at DADA than all of his other classmates, even Hermione and Draco. But, there are also some classes (like Divination) which Harry struggles in, and I just relate so much.

For me, my best class is English/Literature. I might not be the best at spelling (thank the heavens for spell check!) or general grammar, but I’m great at storytelling and analysing plots/characters.

What can I say? Writing is my passion, what I do best. I feel like I was born to write. It’s like my destiny or something. Too bad there wasn’t a prophecy about me!

Sure, I’ve done some great things, but it was probably just luck! (aka Imposter Syndrome)

All jokes aside, Harry and I have imposter syndrome, just like a lot of other people.

IMPOSTER SYNDROME:
The idea that you have success due to luck, rather than your talents or qualifications.

Almost every time something great happens to me, I tend to doubt myself. Did I really get a good grade on that test, or was that just luck? Am I actually good at [insert random talent], or was that just a one-time thing?

Harry feels like this as well, and he mentions it a lot. Especially during Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, Harry worries that everything he’s done so far was just luck, and that he’s not actually special like everyone says he is.

But I promise, I’m trying to work on it! (And things worked out for Harry in the end, so at least I have hope!)

I have a very sarcastic inner voice.

While I can be sarcastic sometimes, I have nowhere near the sass levels of Harry Potter himself.

And I’m usually only sarcastic in my head, unlike Harry!

“Listening to the news! Again?”

“Well, it changes every day, you see,” said Harry.

I am really soft at heart.

I may seem like I don’t care, but I actually care so much. Maybe a little too much.

Generally, I’m an extremely caring person when it comes to family, friends, and animals. While I’ve never had to sacrifice my life for the people I care about… I will just about do anything to make sure the people I love are okay and having a great time with life.

Also, I will never pass up an opportunity to cuddle with a cat or dog, and owls are some of my favorite animals! (Although, I once got a chance to hold an owl like Harry in the gif below, and it was just about the scariest feeling ever.)

Other random coincidental reasons:

  • When I first read the Harry Potter series, I only cried whenever Harry cried, for some reason? That sounds like more than just a coincidence to me. We are connected
  • Um, we both have terrible eyesight!
  • We love to procrastinate everything until the last minute!
  • I once had a dream that I was Harry’s long-lost twin sister! Pretty strange dream, if you ask me, but who would Harry be if he didn’t also have weird dreams?
  • Several years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night, in a cold sweat, for no particular reasonexcept for the fact that my head was throbbing and aching in the exact spot of Harry’s scar. I have distinct memories of clutching my head and basically saying things like, “Well, I guess this is how I go” and “Voldemort is near!”. Very strange indeed, but it went away within a few minutes and never happened again! (No need to worry about my health, haha! I’m fine.)

If we’ve learned anything from this post, I think we can all agree that I was just a really dramatic child. But so was Harry!

Do you and I have any similarities?
Or, are there any characters you are suspiciously similar to?

  1. I guess that proves it….you ARE Harry Potter 😱
Really, though, I think a lot of people forget how relatable Harry is! I don’t think the series would have been nearly as popular if he weren’t such a fleshed out character with a sarcastic inner monologue who experiences things a lot of people can relate to, like imposter syndrome. Also, that story about your forehead hurting where Harry’s scar is……wild 😳

    1. Maybe I AM Harry Potter! 😉
But yes, he’s so relatable, that’s why I love him so much. He’s also one of those characters I’ve loved without ever getting tired of his dialogue or humor, because he really is a great character. And that scar story was a little terrifying when it happened way back then!

  2. I bet I can top you in being Harry. 😉 My last name is really Potter. I was born 1989, the first HP book came out when I was 11. I used a sword (fake) when I was 12 because I lived in the mountains and there was nothing for miles to do. I have an internet best friend named Granger (tho he’s a guy), and I drink tea. Constantly. I also read books, have taken astronomy classes, and I have a cat gray named Crookshanks. I solemnly swear that none of these facts are made up. 🙂

  3. Awww this post made me so happy! You both have so much in common haha I love it. Harry and I share a birthday (along with JK Rowling) which was the coolest thing ever for 10 year old me to find out! And I still get so excited over that every year lol. Great post Xandra!!

  4. Hahaha this is such a fun post! I absolutely love Harry, and though peeps seem to like Hermione the most of the trio, I related to Harry the most too. I’ve always said he’s a bit unobservant slash clueless about certain things, but really, dude’s got a lot on his plate.

And yesss, I also have terrible eyesight, imposter syndrome (though it’s weird since I have terrible luck lol), and I’m good at subjects that I want to be good at. It’s kinda hilarious that you woke up with your forehead aching though…that’s creepy levels of coincidence. 😂

    1. Haha, thank you! 😊 I had a lot of fun writing it!

The older I get, the more I love Harry and the more I realize I’m just like him!

And yeah, I had forgotten about that forehead aching anecdote until recently, and that was one of the reasons why I decided to write this post! 😂 Glad you enjoyed it!
