Bookish Names I Would Give to My Children

All right, everybody, sit down back in your seats: I am NOT expecting a child any time soon. 🤣 I am, however, in the habit of collecting cool names from my favorite books!

So here we go!

Annabeth

Out of all the names in this list, I think this is my favorite female name.

Let’s face it, Annabeth is a cute and reasonable name! I hardly ever hear of any children being given this name, but I do know that some people (who don’t know about Percy Jackson) have named their child Annabeth or Anna Beth.

Also, Annabeth Chase is a great character to name your daughter after! She’s strong, and smart, and overall a great character for young girls to look up to.
(Listen, I know some of y’all may have thought that Annabeth was annoying at first, but I never did!)

Magnus

So… I’m not familiar with the original Magnus (aka Magnus Bane from the Shadowhunters series), but I’m talking about Magnus Chase here.

I mean, I think it’s a pretty cool name. And, more importantly, it’s an actual name. And it’s not hard to say, or spell.

I don’t think my child would have any problems with this name! It’s interesting. And majestic.

Luna

This is another cute and reasonable name, and I’m surprised I don’t hear it very often. It means “moon” in Spanish, it’s nice and short (so the poor child won’t be forced to memorized some unusually long name), and come on, it’s Luna Lovegood! Who doesn’t like Luna?

She’s a strong female character as well.

Um… Cardan?

Maybe?

Sounds like an interesting and simple-enough name, but like… maybe my child would be concerned with its origins? 🤣

*fast forward to me searching the internet for the history of the name “Cardan”*

All right, folks, good news!

The name “Cardan” is actually a variation of the name “Carden”, which is usually a peasant’s name meaning “wool carder”.

… But who are we kidding, I got this name from The Cruel Prince himself and I’m not going to live that down. Oh well.

Viola

There are two different characters here.

Viola (Vee-ola), from Shakespeare’s play, Twelfth Night.

And Viola (Vi-la), from Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking series.

But because we all know how much I love the Chaos Walking series, that’s the Viola I would name my child after!
(I don’t really care about Shakespeare all that much, tbh)

Kendra

I got this one from the MG Fablehaven series. While I have never met or personally heard of someone named Kendra, there is the store Kendra Scott, so this is another reasonable name.

Kendra in these books is also a great young female character, and I would have no problems naming my daughter after her.
(Cardan, however… I think we’d have to work out some issues with that one!)

Trust me, this is a completely real list.

I’m serious about possibly naming my children with some of these names!
(Did you think i was kidding? 🤣)

Jacob

Okay, okay – HEAR ME OUT. There’s a story behind this one!
(This is the best name story, I promise!)

Several years ago, I was at a discount bookstore where they sell books for about half the normal price. I found a paperback 1st Edition copy of The Lightning Thief, and was immediately intrigued (it was one of those ugly ones, with the silver cover, made before John Rocco’s art). So I opened to the first page to see what year it was published, and it was a signed copy! Rick Riordan actually signed it with his full legible name and everything! He even added a little lightning bolt doodle! Today, he just scribbles an “RR” on his books, like most authors.

I bought that book for $2, when it should have been auctioned for around $100!

A few months later, I went back to the same store, and I found ANOTHER 1st Edition of The Lightning Thief, except this one was a hardback (personally, I think those are more rare?). On the inside, it was signed similarly to the one I had found earlier, except it was custom signed and addressed to some kid named “Jacob“.

I bought that copy for $4, and I’m now saving it for my future son (if I ever have a son, wayyy way in the future) whose name will probably be Jacob 😊

That, and the fact that Jacob is just one of my favorite names, and Jacob Portman is my soultwin. But the first reason is better.

Honorable mention:

Baz

Okay, so Baz is a pretty cool name, if I must admit. It’s also the strangest name on this list!

But let’s be honest. Who the heck names their kid Basilton? Is that even a real name?

*fast forward to me searching the internet again*

OMG IT’S A REAL NAME 🤣

Now that I’m done with the list, I feel like… I think the list could’ve been a little longer! I’m sure there are a lot of names I missed, I just forgot!

And so, maybe there will be a part 2 😉

    1. Thank you, Kaya, I’m glad you appreciated it! 🤣 I’ve been sitting on that story for a few years, and now I’m glad book lovers like us can finally hear it! (It’s become a running joke in my family that my son’s name will eventually be Jacob, because I remind my parents of this story all the time!)

  1. The fact you got TWO signed copies of The Lightning Thief, though? Mannnnn, I’m jealous. What an amazing story! I’m sure future Jacob will love it!
I am a name obsessed and I love Luna and Magnus. They’re beautiful names, and quite unique. My favorite literary name has to be Darcy, though. I have never even read Pride & Prejudice, but I think it’s a beautiful name, for either boys or girls. I also like the name Elias, from An Ember in the Ashes. I think it’s possible to be a future choice for me, as the name works for my main language – Portuguese – too and I think it’s beautiful in all pronounciations.
Great post, Xandra! Hope you don’t mind if I inspire myself from your post & write a similar list on my blog (crediting you ofc).

    1. Thanks, I’m so proud of my Lightning Thief collection! (I think I have a total of 5 copies? I lost count!) But those are the best ones 🙂

Darcy is a good one, I didn’t think of that name! I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice either, but that’s a cute girl name 🙂 And it’s AMAZING that you mentioned Elias, because I *love* that name, but that’s actually the name of my main character in the Fantasy novel I’m writing! So that’s why I would not name my son Elias (even though all of my characters are technically my “sons”, lol).

And of course, go ahead and do a post like this! I’m excited to see what your names will be!

  3. This is such a cute post idea!! I love it!! I personally haven’t read any names that I thought “oh, that would be great for a future baby name”… more often than not, I pay the most attention to the names when I’m frantically trying to name a character of my own and can’t come up with anything good, haha. But I guess that’s technically the same thing, since my characters are my babies 😉

    1. Thank you, Alex! 💕 Even though I made this list I would probably go for more “traditional” names in real life 🤣 but my story behind naming my son Jacob is legit! And yes, I also look at names for characters! But most of the time, I get upset because there’s already a character with that name, and I feel like my character’s name has to be more original! (And of course, our characters are also our children!)

      1. I can’t believe you ended up with two signed copies of the Lightning Thief 😂 what a stroke of luck! And I totally feel you on the character names thing. Part of the reason it takes me so long to come up with them is because I can never find anything original enough! But then the problem is, the more original they are, the less pronounceable they seem to be…

  4. The story about Jacob is so freaking cute I can’t…😍😍 Personally, I love names that go with months and seasons, like April, May, June, Summer, Autumn (I’ll probably just name my future character Spring). I just find them really adorable!!!

  5. omg this is such a fun list! Annabeth and Luna are such great choices. Also I would…um…name a child maybe Miri from Princess Academy (yeah I totally borrowed my book blogger pen name from there because I liked it so much!). Also Merei from The Queen’s Rising, and Oriana from The Cruel Prince.

  6. Aaaah I love your story for having Jacob as a name! As for what I’d name my kids well…*scrambles round to find list* dammit I literally made a list, I don’t know where it is now but I think I can remember a few of the names: Lexi, Feyre, Rhys, Tessa erm I can’t remember anymore haha but I loved this post Xandra haha! Honestly, when readers have kids, they’ll have the best names ever. Also we’ll probably fight to name them cause wow, our name choices are better xD

  7. But cardan is the weirdest name on that list for me 😂 It seems like the product of someone trying to come up with a cool name for a boy and utterly failing! (I love Holly Black though, no shade). The name sounds way too close to cardigan or card. And I’m not saying this because I’m a Cardan hater, because I actually liked him when I read the cruel prince. Ah, I hope I haven’t offended anyone with this comment :,)
